Another mountain with a black page in its history book.
Tom Simpson died at 1.3 kilometres from the summit of the Giant of the Provence during a stage of the 1967 Tour de France.
Starting from Bédoin, the first five kilometres of the climb are not steep at all, but once you took the first hairpin in the centre of Saint Estève, you enter the forest where the road clings to the mountain with a percentage that varies between 9 and 11. Half a kilometre past Chalet Reynard you can see the mountain top, but it will take another six kilometres and at least twenty minutes of suffering before you get there.
The mountain got his name because of the extreme winds that can occur on the mountain top, but that’s one thing that won’t bother you when you’re climbing this mythical mountain on your indoor training system.
