GIRO D'ITALIA 2007 COURSES:

  • CAPRERA-LA MADDALENA Dist. 25,7km Max Slope 7,6% Elv.Gain 389m Avg.Slope 3,1%
This is a team time trial over a distance of about 25 km. It offers scenic views of the islands of Caprera and La Maddalena. The latter is the only inhabited island of the whole archipelago of the same name. The characteristic architecture of the port of call of Cala Gavetta dates back to the late 19th century, i. e. to the time when the Italian Navy built an outpost here still dominated by the fort of the Guardia Vecchia. The starting line of the team time trial is in Stagnali, on the island of Caprera. Caprera is famous for having been chosen by Giuseppe Garibaldi as his resting place: he lived there from 1856 to his dying day (2nd June 1882). Together with his last wife, Francesca Armosino, he planned his so-called “Casa Bianca” (White House) which has now been turned into a Garibaldi museum. The panoramic pink granite peaks of the Teialone and Poggio Raso are accessible on small roads that cross Caprera's Nature Reserve. After Caprera, you cross a dyke and a bridge over the so-called Passo della Moneta canal, the itinerary of this stage then follows La Maddalena's main road, the so-called “Panoramica”. This is a very undulating course that leads to the climb to Santa Trinità. A steep descent to Cala Francese and a climb on the via Barrettini with gradients of up to 10%25. Then again downhill across La Maddalena's settlement until you reach the Port.
  • SALERNO-MONTEVERGINE DI MERCOGLIANO Dist. 49,0km Max Slope 10,3% Elv.Gain 1385m Avg.Slope 3,6%
The fourth stage of the Giro 2007 starts from Salerno. This very nice southern city is full or cultural and historic sites and lies at the junction between the scenic Amalfi and Cilento coasts. The stage route follows the Amalfi coast: since this scenic road keeps twisting and turning, cyclists need to be constantly on the look-out. Vietri, Amalfi, Positano, then the crossing into the Naples province, the gentle climb to Picco S. Angelo, the fascinating landscape of the city of Sorrento and its peninsula. The route then proceeds towards Sant’Agnello, Piano and Castellamare di Stabia; it crosses into the Salerno province and touches the populous towns of Angri, Pagani, Nocera Inferiore and Mercato S. Severino before entering the Avellino province and proceeding towards the final climb to the Madonna di Montevergine. First uphill finish. The first 80 kilometres involve a tour of the Sorrento peninsula and include a GPM climb to Picco S. Angelo. There follows a descent towards Sorrento; after Castellamare di Stabia the profile remains flat until the intermediate sprint in Castel S:Giorgio. After the climb to Cenzi and Avellino, it's time for the final ascent: a 17-km climb with a very regular gradient of 5%25.
  • TIVOLI-SPOLETO Dist. 73,5km Max Slope 10% Elv.Gain 2036m Avg.Slope 5,3%
Tivoli is a scenic hillside town located in the Monti Tiburtini. It lies on the banks of the River Aniene and counts among its most famous attractions the gardens and fountains of the Villa d'Este. Today's stage starts from Tivoli and proceeds northwards to Palombara Sabina. It crosses into the Rieti province and takes you to S: Giovanni Reatino. After the crossing of Rieti, there's the climb to Monte Terminillo, or rather to Sella di Leonessa, which lies at an altitude of 1894 m above sea level. At the bottom of the descent, you cross into the Umbria region (Perugia province) and proceed towards Monteleone di Spoleto. There is a first climb to Forca Capistrello (1211 m) and another one to Forca Cerro before the descent to Spoleto. You then have to run a circuit of that city before the finish. Quite a rough stage. In Sella di Leonessa, you come very close to the 2000-m mark of the Monte Terminillo. After the steep descent to Leonessa, there is another climb, this time to Forca Capistrello and then another downhill stretch until Valnerina. From there, the road ramps up again until Forca di Cerro and includes a section where the gradient reaches 17%25. Descent to Spoleto, where there is a flat-profile city circuit to complete before the finish.
  • LIDO DI CAMAIORE-SANTUARIO NS.SIGNORA Dist. 28,9km Max Slope 11,2% Elv.Gain 1010m Avg.Slope 5,5%
Today's start is from Versilia with Forte dei Marmi; the stage route then crosses into Liguria with Amelia, Sarzana, La Spezia, Cinque Terre and Levanto. There, the course leaves the seashore and proceeds towards Varese Ligure, up the Vara valley and the Passo della Biscia. Descent into the Val Graveglia, Garibaldi's birthplace (although some sources suggest he may have been from Chiavari). After Lavagna (slate quarries), Chiavari, Rapallo, La Ruta, Bogliasco and then Nervi in the Genoa province: the course enters Genoa and proceeds through city streets towards Pontedecimo and Bolzaneto and the final climb to the sanctuary of Nostra Signora della Guardia. Second uphill finish, very long stage (250 km), flat profile till La Spezia, then many climbs and continuous undulations. From La Spezia to Levanto the stage crosses the Cinque Terre that are characterized by rather tough climbs. After Varese Ligure there's the ascent to the Passo della Biscia (GPM climb) and then it's all downhill until Genoa. The short, but steep climb to Campi (GPM) takes you to Pontedecimo and then to Bolzaneto where the final 8.8-km ascent begins. The last few kilometres include stretches with a gradient of 14%25.
  • SCALANGHE-BRIANCON (FRANCE) Dist. 34,0km Max Slope 11,5% Elv.Gain 1822m Avg.Slope 5,8%
Today's starting line is in Scalenghe, a small village near Pinerolo. The first part of the stage is across flat open country which extends into the Cuneo province. After Cavour, Saluzzo and the majestic scenery of Casteldelfino it's time for the climb to the Col dell’Agnello which reaches 2748 m above sea level and is the Cima Coppi (highest point) of the Giro 2007. By now, we have crossed into France (Queyras region) and reached the barren landscape of the Casse Déserte with its two monuments commemorating Fausto Coppi and Louison Bobet. After the mythic climb to the Col d’Izoard it's all downhill to Briançon (1300 m above sea level), a typical Alpine town which is located at the confluence of five valleys and surrounded by mountains, many of which are over 4,000 m high. Briançon has provided the finishing line for a Giro stage twice before (in 1996 and 2000) and no fewer than 30 times for the Tour de France, so no wonder that world-famous champions have triumphed here. This is a high mountain stage characterized by the climb to the Cima Coppi, the 2748-m-high Colle dell’ Agnello. From Casteldelfino upwards the climb gets tougher. After Chianale there's a 10-km stretch where the average gradient is about 10%25 but with a few sections where it reaches 15%25. Steep descent to Château-Queyras followed by the climb to the Col d’Izoard (maximum gradient: 14%25). Final descent to the finishing line in Briançon including the crossing of the old town on cobble-stoned streets with gradients ranging from 10 to 14%25.
  • BIELLA-SANTUARIO DI OROPA Dist. 11,5km Max Slope 10,3% Elv.Gain 703m Avg.Slope 6,1%
Individual time trial on a rather short distance, but on an uphill course from Biella to the nearby Sanctuary of Oropa The starting line is in the very heart of this wool-manufacturing town which has been nicknamed “the Manchester of Italy” on account of its highly specialized wool industry and top quality textiles. The stage itinerary is quite panoramic but should not distract the cyclists from the very tough climb that awaits them and that has become famous for being the scenery of dramatic episodes in the history of the Giro. The finish is at the “Santuario della Madonna di Oropa”, the Alps' greatest Marian sanctuary. It is devoted to the Black Madonna and connected to the nearby “Sacro Monte” sanctuary which is made up of 19 chapels. 12.6-km individual time trial: gentle climb to Biella during the first two kilometres; then the real ascent begins with gradients of 6–7%25 at first. The incline then slackens until the Favaro junction and rises again to up to 13%25. The crossing of Favaro takes place on relatively flat, porphyry-paved roads. After the junction with the SS 144 main road, the ascent proceeds in steps with gradients ranging from 12 to 6%25. Flagstone finish.
  • TRENTO-TRE CIME DI LAVAREDO Dist. 22,7km Max Slope 14,3% Elv.Gain 1287m Avg.Slope 7,2%
After having left Trento the itinerary of this gruelling stage takes you northwards across the vineyards and orchards of the Adige valley. After Lavis, San Michele and Egna, there's the climb over the Passo di S. Lugano and then the Val di Fiemme: Cavalese, Tesero, Predazzo, Moena and breathtaking views of the Dolomite mountains. Then again uphill to the Passo S. Pellegrino: there you cross into the Belluno province which hosts the final part of the stage. After Falcade, Cencenighe Agordino, Agordo and Caprile, you reach the foot of the Colle di S. Lucia. Once you are in Selva di Cadore, there are lovely views of the Pelmo and Marmolada mountains to enjoy, but it is soon time to tackle the climb over the Passo di Giau. In a landscape constantly dominated by Dolomite peaks, you reach Pocol and proceed downhill to the Ampezzo hollow. Although you are now approaching yet another climb, that of the Passo Tre Croci, the unique beauty of Lake Misurina and the Tre Cime di Lavaredo makes you get your second wind. In the Giro of 1981, it was during this stage that Giovanni Battaglin took over the pink jersey from Contini; he then managed to defend the jersey all the way to the last time trial and by doing so became the first and only Venetian ever to have won the Giro. Crucial Dolomite stage. It includes 4 GPM climbs and has a combined difference in altitude of over 4000 metres: From the Adige valley, it takes you through the Val di Fiemme and Val di Fassa and over the Passo S: Pellegrino. Ascents to Caprile, to the Belvedere di Colle S. Lucia and over the Passo Giau (10-km climb with an average gradient of over 9%25). Steep descent to Cortina and climb over the Passo Tre Croci, Misurina. The finishing line is at the foot of the Tre Cime di Lavaredo; during the last four kilometres, the gradient ranges from 12 to 18%25.
  • LIENZ (AUSTRIA)-MONTE ZONCOLAN Dist. 28,3km Max Slope 17,6% Elv.Gain 1664m Avg.Slope 9,9%
Climb to Monte Zoncolan from the Ovaro side. Short, but gruelling stage due to very steep inclines in its final part. The starting line is in Lienz (Austria), 35 km from the border with Italy. From San Candido/Innichen to Sesto/Sexten, then over the Monte Croce/Kreuzberg pass into the Belluno province: S. Stefano di Cadore, Sappada/Bladen, the Cima Sappada pass and the crossing into the Udine province. This is Italy's Carnic region (“Carnia”) with Forni Avoltri, Rigolato and Mieli. A brief, but steep climb takes you to Tualis. Gentle ascent to Ravascletto, Sella Valcalda, Comeglians and finally Ovaro. And now comes Europe's hardest climb: the ZONCOLAN. This climb is 10 kilometres long; the average gradient is 12%25 but there are stretches where the incline reaches 22%25: these plain figures speak volumes about the extreme toughness of this climb where everyone has to give his all to avoid dismounting.
  • BARDOLINO-VERONA Dist. 41,9km Max Slope 12% Elv.Gain 398m Avg.Slope 2,6%
This time trial will deliver the final and irrevocable verdict. Its flattish itinerary first points northwards. Once you have reached Garda, you leave the lake of the same name behind you and head for Costermano, the native village of Adolfo Consolini, a discus thrower who won Italy a gold medal at the London games of 1948 and who was several times world record holder. You proceed towards Rivoli and Pastrengo, both famous former battlefields. Once you are in Bussolengo, it won't take you long to reach the finishing line on Verona's famous Piazza Bra with the Arena and other historic buildings serving as a prestigious backdrop. Individual time trial. This test against the clock can be divided into two parts: the first one is undulated, includes gradients of about 5%25 and takes place on main roads with wide bends. The second part extends over 15 kilometres; its profile is mainly flat with a few stretches that are slightly downhill.
